Our puzzle sets are ordinary PDFs. They open in any viewer that opens PDFs, which is basically every device with a screen. E-ink tablets in particular are a good fit, because chess puzzles are text-shaped: high contrast, mostly static, better read on a matte reflective surface than a backlit one.

The design target is the [reMarkable line](/news/remarkable-for-chess-learning), and the specific test device is the reMarkable Paper Pure. Everything else is best-effort based on the device's published specs and how it handles standard PDFs. This is the honest way to write this guide. We do not own every e-ink tablet on the market. The PDFs are ordinary, so they should render, and this page tries to say what to expect on each device without pretending to have tested one we have not.

## The format, in one paragraph

Every puzzle set PDF is 210 by 280 millimetres, which is a 3:4 portrait aspect ratio. Boards are rendered at 1600 pixels wide, which is enough resolution for any current e-ink display. Everything is pure black and white — no grey squares, no colour highlights, no gradients — because e-ink handles pure high-contrast art best. Pages are single-column with one puzzle per page. Nothing about the file is device-specific.

## reMarkable line (Paper Pure tested; Pro, 2, and 1 all compatible)

Every current reMarkable device shares a 3:4 screen, so our PDFs fill the display edge to edge on all of them with no cropping and no letterboxing. Our test device is the Paper Pure, but everything below applies to the whole line.

- **Paper Pure** — 8-inch, 3:4. Pocketable. Tested. Boards are smaller in your hand than on the larger models but read fine.
- **Paper Pro** — 11.8-inch, 1620 by 2160 pixels at 229 PPI. Largest current model. Compatible by aspect ratio; not personally tested by us.
- **reMarkable 2** — 10.3-inch, 1404 by 1872 pixels at 226 PPI. Same viewer, same experience.
- **reMarkable 1** — 10.3-inch. Discontinued but still in circulation. Same viewer.

Every reMarkable's default PDF viewer supports pen input directly, so you can fill in the notation grid without any extra setup. Sync happens over Wi-Fi through the reMarkable web app or desktop client. Files load in seconds.

If you already own any reMarkable, this is the intended experience. If you are choosing between models for chess specifically, larger is better for board size but everything else is equal — pick the one that suits your reading habits generally.

## Boox tablets (Note Air, Note Max, Tab Ultra, Palma)

[Boox](https://shop.boox.com/) makes a range of e-ink Android tablets. The current lineup includes the Note Air 3 and Note Air 4 (10.3-inch, 3:4), the Note Max (13.3-inch, 3:4), and the Palma (6-inch phone-sized).

Because Boox tablets run Android, they can install any PDF viewer from the Play Store or their own store. The stock NeoReader viewer handles standard PDFs fine, including ours. If you prefer, you can install [Xodo](https://www.xodo.com/), MuPDF, or Adobe Acrobat.

The Note Air 3 and Note Air 4, at 10.3-inch 3:4, will render our PDFs at almost the same size as a reMarkable 2. The Note Max, at 13.3-inch, will render the puzzles larger than any current reMarkable. The Palma is chess-adjacent at best — the board would be quite small — but usable if you already carry one.

Pen support varies by model. Both the Note Air and Note Max come with a pen and support handwritten annotation on PDFs, which lets you use the notation grid the same way you would on a reMarkable.

## Kindle Scribe

The [Kindle Scribe](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09BS26B8B) is a 10.2-inch e-ink tablet at 1860 by 2480 pixels, 300 PPI. Aspect ratio is 3:4, matching our PDFs.

Amazon's PDF handling on the Scribe has historically been more limited than on general-purpose e-ink tablets. Recent firmware improvements allow annotations on PDFs. Our files load, render at the correct size, and are readable. The main practical caveat is that the Kindle ecosystem is more locked-down than the alternatives above — you send the file via the Send to Kindle service or copy it over USB.

If you already use a Scribe and want chess puzzles on it, this works. If you are choosing an e-ink tablet primarily for annotating puzzles, the openness of a reMarkable or Boox is worth the tradeoff.

## Supernote A5X, A5X2, A6X

[Supernote](https://supernote.com/) tablets are e-ink writing devices with a distinctive matte feel and long battery life. The A5X and A5X2 are 10.3-inch, roughly 3:4. The A6X is a smaller 7.8-inch.

Supernote's built-in PDF reader handles standard PDFs well, with annotation support and side-by-side note-taking. Our files should render cleanly.

Supernote's philosophy — no store, no distraction layer, focused on writing — is closest in spirit to reMarkable. If you value that focus and already have one, it is a good chess-puzzle device.

## Daylight Computer DC-1

The [Daylight Computer](https://daylightcomputer.com/) is a different technology. Its LivePaper display is not e-ink but a reflective LCD that mimics paper without the ghosting or refresh limitations of e-ink. The device is 10.5-inch at 60Hz, greyscale.

For static content like chess puzzles, this is effectively an even better paper experience than e-ink — no refresh flicker, no slow page turns — while keeping the eye-friendliness of a reflective non-backlit display. It runs Android, so any PDF viewer works.

We have not tested a DC-1 directly, but the format's specifications are a good match. If you own one, our PDFs should render at the correct aspect ratio with no configuration.

## Kobo Elipsa, Sage, and Libra Colour

[Kobo](https://us.kobobooks.com/) makes several e-ink tablets in the 7-to-10-inch range. The Elipsa 2E and Sage support styli and PDF annotation. Kobo's PDF handling is decent, though the Elipsa's aspect ratio is a hair off from 3:4 so you may see thin margins.

For light puzzle work, these are fine. For a daily practice, the annotation experience is not quite as polished as reMarkable or Boox, but it is workable.

## What matters, device-agnostically

If you are deciding between e-ink devices for chess, here is what actually matters, in rough order:

1. **Aspect ratio close to 3:4.** Anything else adds letterbox or crop. Most e-ink tablets are 3:4.
2. **Screen size, 10 inches or larger.** Boards need room. A 6-inch e-reader is too small for a comfortable notation grid.
3. **PDF annotation support.** If you want to write your line before checking the solution, you need a stylus and a viewer that supports handwriting on PDFs.
4. **Resolution.** Anything above 220 PPI renders the boards cleanly. Most current e-ink tablets meet this.
5. **A quiet workflow.** File transfer, viewer speed, distraction level. This is where reMarkable and Supernote are strongest.

None of the above requires you to buy a new device. If you already own one, load a set and try it. The PDFs are free, the puzzles are hand-picked, and one afternoon on your current tablet will tell you more than any spec sheet.
